Your child can travel the world this summer. S/he can meet intriguing people, visit natural wonders, fascinating architectural sites, or taste delicious, new foods. A good laugh is also easy to find. A gripping adventure can be discovered, or maybe an unusual, enthralling experience. All this, and more, is possible with a short trip to your local library or bookmobile.
It’s free! And so is the travel agent!
Summer reading provides HUGE benefits for children of all ages, especially for the practice and the self-selection that it provides. Research indicates these two factors are the best predictors of good reading and writing skills.
Modern schools provide few chances for students to choose their own books and read the content that they desire. Needless to say, though, they probably need a tour guide—the more enthusiastic the better. I have learned that loving books can be contagious with kids. Parents, start with what you love. You will enjoy sharing your joy, and your kids will reap the benefits.
Siblings and friends can also inspire reading books that motivate even more reading. IF ADULTS (parents and teachers) DON’T INSIST on summer reading, we will quickly become a nation of non-readers and non-thinkers.
